Acupuncture Q & A

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses thin, sterile needles to redirect the flow of energy through your body. This energy, or essential life force, is known as “qi,” which is pronounced like “chi.”

Ancient Chinese medical experts taught that your qi runs along clearly defined pathways in your body, called meridians, and that there are 350 distinct points where acupuncture needles can access these meridians.

Western medicine approaches acupuncture from a neurological standpoint. Acupuncture points are areas in the body where your muscles, nerves, and connective tissues can be stimulated to create measurable changes.

Regardless of which approach you choose to believe, there is no mistaking the fact that acupuncture has brought positive change to the lives of many.

What Issues Can Acupuncture Treat?

Because there are so many acupuncture points throughout your body the treatment can improve a wide range of conditions. Some of the issues acupuncture can treat include:

  • Low back pain
  • Hypertension
  • Painful periods
  • Infertility
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Knee pain
  • Headache and migraine
  • Sprains
  • Morning sickness
  • Allergies
  • Psoriasis, eczema, or other skin conditions
  • Digestive issues
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia

This is far from a comprehensive list. Acupuncture can improve your experience with many types of pain or medical complaints.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

In the hands of a skilled practitioner, acupuncture is not painful. As the treatment needles are inserted, you might feel a slight pinch, stinging, or tingling. It’s also normal to sense a dull aching at the base of the treatment needle. These sensations will soon subside.

Acupuncture should never be a painful process. If you feel anything more than slight, fleeting  discomfort, let your practitioner know. Adjustments can be made to make the session more comfortable. Depending on the area being treated, your session can last 30-90 minutes, but the treatment needles are only left in place for 10-30 minutes of that time. It’s not uncommon to feel relaxed or even fall asleep during a session.

Acupuncture treatment needles are thin and flexible and are also sterile. The needles are only used once, so there is no risk of contamination. There is also virtually no risk of infection when acupuncture is performed by an experienced practitioner using proper medical standards.
